TW Construction completed the new Flaxbourne Fire Station in Ward, Marlborough, delivering a modern, purpose-built emergency services facility designed to support both the Flaxbourne Volunteer Fire Brigade and the wider community. Constructed on the site of the former Ward Fire Station, the project replaced an ageing building that had sustained damage during the Seddon and Kaikōura earthquakes and had operated under temporary repairs for several years. The new facility was designed to serve not only as a fully functional fire station, but also as a community resilience hub capable of supporting emergency response and recovery efforts during natural disasters.
The completed station incorporated modern appliance bays with side-by-side vehicle access, dedicated training facilities, office space, kitchen and staff amenities, and a community gathering area for use during emergencies. The building also included integrated operational communications infrastructure, a seismic-resilient design, and the capability to connect to an on-site generator, ensuring the facility could remain operational and self-sufficient when needed most.
Throughout the project, TW Construction worked closely with a network of Marlborough-based contractors and suppliers, with more than 90 percent of trades and suppliers sourced locally. This approach supported the regional economy while drawing on local expertise to deliver a high-quality outcome. The project required significant technical coordination, incorporating IL4 structural performance requirements, integrated communications systems, specialist emergency service functionality, modern appliance accommodation, and infrastructure designed to strengthen community resilience.
Despite weather-related challenges during construction, the project was successfully completed and handed over as a modern, fit-for-purpose facility.
